Raptoring Around RMFC
This past weekend I was able to make to to RMFC for the first time. Only hours before my flight to Denver, I had managed to make myself a quick tail of somewhat appropriate shape. I dared not make it any longer, for fear of taking out bystanders with my quick and lithe raptor like movements. I am still calling her Kinglet, for lack of a better name.
I had a lot of fun, though I was pretty exhausted from camping in the approximately 10k-foot high mountains just days prior, and my stamina was not the best as a result.
(Mask base is by kierstinlapatka, check out her fantastic work! Slightly modified and finished by me. The fantastic leather thing on my butt is crafted by FolkOfTheWoodCraft .)

Photo credits to my husband, eldarath. This was the first time I had a real camera with me at a convention! Fun! If anyone else has photos of Kinglet, I’d love to see them too. I am still a bit nervous about costuming like this (you can not deny that it’s a pretty silly thing to do), but it beings out an innocent fun that reminds me of childhood. It was delightful to make people smile, and I was happily surprised that a number of people knew that I was playing as a feathered dinosaur!

Herla, a TEF inspired character owned by Sighthoundlady, is among my favorite deer characters of all time. Gotta love that gold chain and that thick, feathery headdress! Artwork by Akreon, Sighthoundlady, Jala-whey, Shadiksilence, and Apeldille

OK SO since I literally cannot find whether or not this animal is legal I am going to post this here! Like a week ago two customers came in and were going to give my boss this Spotted Salamander they found under a log. But he saw me freaking out behind them about it and suggested they give him/her to me!

SO I HAVE HER NOW IM ASSUMING SHES A SHE AND LOOK HOW AMAZNG SHE IS

Mike named her Sweet Potato. (aka Yam!)

She’s in a kritter keeper for the moment until I get her outfitted with a 10gal. She’s eating crickets like a champ (I wasn’t sure she was eating at first) and I’ll get worms to chop up ASAP.

SWEET POTATO ShE’S SO CUTE

But wait two people just… found a Salamander under a log and took it to a pet store? Wut

Yeah I know. I guess they were doing construction though! So I guess they didn’t know where to release her so they took her to the only pet store they knew of lol. WORKS FOR MEEEEE

AHHHHHHH PUT IT BACK THEYRE ENDANGERED AND ILLEGAL TO KEEP IN NY

I really don’t think they’re endangered? Bc I see these like all the time near the pond in my yard and the creek behind my house, so it seems like they’re really common?

The above image is of a California Tiger Salamander, and they are an endangered species of salamander. I would assume this would make them illegal to own.

I’m sorry, I don’t mean to be rude, but sweet potato looks nothing like a California tiger salamander! She had two distinct rows of bright yellow spots along her back, running from the top of her head to her tail. Just because a salamander has yellow spots does not mean they’re the same species. Plus, I live in Rhode Island and there is no way she could be anything from California! c:

THIS WAS AMAZING OH MY GOD!

I was so excited! It’s some kind of parasitic wasp carrying a spider. I wish I knew the species off the top of my head but alas, I do not.

Wasps like these find insects and paralyze them. Then they find a crevice to hide the frozen- but still living- spider and deposit their eggs in/on them. Then the eggs hatch and the larvae have something to eat! Such an amazing adaptation and a good mother. I mean look at the size if the spider vs. The wasp. She’s so strong.

Being a predator, they also keep populations of insects in check! So if you see a parasitic wasp, don’t kill it! It’s likely looking for a safe place to hide her eggs or a mate. They are unlikely to sting unless you hurt them!

Leo no, don’t release Valentino out into the wild. Leo no. You’re going to give people heart attacks.
